Stars: Contemporary Prints by Derrière L’Étoile Studio
Featuring significant contemporary prints by many of the artists who defined the American art scene after 1980, this is the first survey exhibition of prints produced by Derrière L’Étoile (“Behind the Star”). Founded in New York in 1978 by Maurice Sánchez—the master printer behind the creative stars—the studio has produced extraordinary prints in lithography and other traditional printmaking media, as well as with the latest photographic and digital technologies.
Selected from the Zimmerli’s extensive print collection, this exhibition is displayed in three parts. Part I showcases prints created between 1980 and 1993 by such artists as Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Sarah Charlesworth, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, Robert Longo, Elizabeth Murray, Susan Rothenberg, Kenny Scharf, and Laurie Simmons. In fall 2013, Part II features prints of the 1990s. In spring 2014, Part III presents prints created between 2000-2014.
