Subversives: Revolutionaries in Music and Art

When traditions falter, subversion highlights their weakness and brings needed change. In its first in-person post-pandemic concert, the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra features works of brash innovators in modern classical music in collaboration with the Zimmerli.

Subversives includes chamber works by composers like Ethyl Smith, who wrote the anthem of the English suffragette movement, and Dmitri Shostakovich, who deftly defied Stalin and lived to achieve worldwide acclaim. The music is based on artwork by artists in the Zimmerli's collection who similarly bucked their political and cultural leadership to bring hope and renewal to their audiences. Arrive early to view the selected artworks before the performance.

Admission is free, but space is very limited and reservations are required to attend the concert. Attendance is capped; standing/additional seating is not permitted, according to safety protocols and capacity limitations. Please order tickets at www.nbco.org.

General admission to the museum is free. Reservations are not required. Please review museum guidelines before visiting.
