Staging Symbolism: Programs for the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre in Paris

Founded in 1893, the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre in Paris quickly became the site for innovative symbolist theatrical productions. In contrast to mainstream venues, which primarily presented formulaic and moralist plays, the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre staged works by Henrik Ibsen, Auguste Strindberg, and others who explored characters' psychological states and confronted social issues. Many of Paris's leading artists designed programs for the theater's productions, indicating the close connection between avant-garde art and theater at the time. This exhibition of 20 programs made for the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre by artists including Edouard Vuillard, Felix Vallotton, Ker-Xavier Roussel, and Alfred Jarry is selected from the Zimmerli's collection.
